Y-ASPIRE: After-school program accepting applications

BELLOWS FALLS >> For the 18th consecutive year, Meeting Waters YMCA's after-school program, Y-ASPIRE, will provide important supports for hundreds of area youth, their working parents, the businesses that employ these parents, and the seven communities served by the program. "When Steve and I created Y-ASPIRE 17 years ago, we applied all of our knowledge and experience in positive youth development, after-school programming and family strengthening," said Meeting Waters YMCA's Program Director, Susan Fortier.

BELLOWS FALLS >> Confident a proposed wireless communications facility in Warner Center will help expand cell phone service in town, the Rockingham Planning Commission voted last week to support Verizon Wireless's Certificate of Public Good application from Aug. 7. The commission's vote was unanimous and on Aug. 26 Chairman Alan LaCombe signed a letter to the Vermont Public Service Board making this clear. A monopine is a pole dressed up like a tree to blend in with the natural environment.

BRATTLEBORO >> Vermont Student Assistance Corp. will offer free workshops at local high schools to help families plan how to pay for college and training after high school. The presentations, which normally run 90 minutes to two hours, provide students and their parents with information on financial aid and other resources available to pay for college.

This week will mark the 19th year thousands of volunteers roll up their sleeves to remove tons of trash along rivers, streams, parks, boat launches and trails in Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Connecticut - the four states of the Connecticut River basin.

The Saxtons River Suite and the art curtains it inspired will be the center of a musical and visual tribute celebrating this 500-person village, its seasons and the beauty of the region throughout the year.

The New Hampshire State Police conducted a motor vehicle stop on Ash Brook Court in Keene, N.H., at 1 a.m. As a result, David G. Milne, 48, of West Chesterfield, was cited with driving under the influence. At 1:55 a.m., the New Hampshire State Police conducted a motor vehicle stop on Route 9 in Keene, N.H. As a result, Nicholas Dow, 25, of Brattleboro, was cited with operating a vehicle with a suspended license and racing on the highway.

On Oct. 31, the Brattleboro Police Department responded to the Brattleboro Memorial Hospital after receiving a report that there was a patient who was allegedly in possession of drugs. After an investigation, Teah Golembeski, 23, of Hinsale, N.H., was cited with possession of heroin.

Stern has titled his show "All Over the Map," referring to the paintings that he created while traveling, and for the variety of pieces and styles.

Putney F.D. responds to third alarm fire at Soundview Paper

PUTNEY >> At 03:09 a.m. Southwest N.H. District Fire Mutual Aid received a 911 call reporting an unknown type fire within the Lower Mill building of the Soundview Paper complex, located at 8 Water Street. The Putney Fire Department was dispatched on a first alarm assignment, along with automatic aid companies from Dummerston, Brattleboro, Westminster, and an ambulance from Rescue Inc. Putney units arrived at 03:18 a.m. and employees advised of a fire within the primary paper processing machine within the Lower Mill.

He served for six years in the U.S. Marines during the 1st Gulf War and was a member of both the American Legion Post 67 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, both located in Chester.

'Bat Boy, the Musical' opens at Main Street Arts

Saxtons River >> Main Street Arts announced the opening of its production of "Bat Boy, the Musical", beginning Friday at 7:30 p.m., with additional evening shows on Saturday, Thursday March 10, Friday, March 11, and Saturday, March 12. MSA will also host 2 p.m. matinees this Saturday and Sunday, and again on Sunday, March 13. The show, which Managing Director Margo Ghia called,"The loudest, funniest, and easily the flat-out weirdest show Main Street Arts has ever produced," is an edgy mix of slapstick surrealism, and camp horror which mixes elements of hillbilly rock and post-modern Broadway into its boisterous score. Bat Boy's take on contemporary violence and prejudice is far from subtle.
